Japan's household assets have reached an unprecedented milestone, surging to a record 2519 trillion yen (approximately 16.1 trillion US dollars) as of the end of June, according to a quarterly flow of funds report released by the Bank of Japan. This remarkable achievement represents a year-on-year increase of 11%, driven primarily by a strong rally in equity markets.

The surge in stock valuations has been particularly noteworthy, with household equity holdings catapulting by an impressive 47% to reach 486 trillion yen. This substantial growth in stock assets has been the primary catalyst behind the overall expansion of household wealth, overshadowing modest gains in other asset categories.

Meanwhile, household cash and deposit balances, which remain the largest component of Japanese household assets, experienced a more subdued growth rate of 0.5%, climbing to 1132 trillion yen. This conservative increase reflects the continued preference for safe-haven assets among Japanese households despite the attractive returns offered by the equities market.

In a related development, the Bank of Japan's holdings of outstanding government bonds have declined to 46.7%, marking the lowest proportion since the second quarter of 2019. This reduction in central bank bond ownership comes alongside foreign investors currently holding 7.9% of Japanese government bonds, highlighting the evolving composition of government debt ownership in the country.
