[Click to register] The S&P 500 rebounded to close higher on Thursday after sharp swings, with dip buying pushing the index to end a three-day losing streak. Previously, concerns about AI trading and stubborn inflation continued to weigh on the market.

The S&P 500 rose 0.3%, having fallen 0.6% in early trading. Eight of the 11 major sectors advanced, with healthcare leading the gains. The Nasdaq 100 significantly narrowed its decline, closing down 0.1%.

Major stock indices came under pressure in early trading as data showed US producer prices rose at the fastest pace in more than four years in September, reinforcing the case for the Federal Reserve to continue raising interest rates in the coming months. After the stocks and bonds of AI computing power supplier CoreWeave were sold off, shaking investor confidence in AI trading, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang defended the company's financial condition.

Jeff Buchbinder, chief equity strategist at LPL Financial, said: "In this four-year bull market, dip buyers have consistently been rewarded, and today it appears they are doing so again."

As traders rotated from tech stocks to other areas, value stocks helped drive the S&P 500 higher. The S&P 500 equal-weight index, a measure of market breadth, rose 1.4%, the largest gain since early August. Brian Frank, president and portfolio manager at Frank Funds, said: "Under the AI boom, tech stocks have become quite expensive, while value stocks have become too cheap."

Chip stocks, which have been highly volatile this week, remained choppy. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell for a seventh consecutive trading day.

At the close, the S&P 500 rose 0.3% to 7,744.06 points. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.1% to 52,177.69 points. The Nasdaq Composite rose 0.1% to 26,713.03 points. The Nasdaq 100 fell 0.1% to 29,935.6 points. The Russell 2000 rose 1.4% to 2,767.269 points.
