An international dialogue for mayors, themed "Huangshan 2026," commenced in Huangshan City, Anhui Province, on May 29. City leaders and representatives from nations including Germany, Italy, Serbia, and Slovakia convened to exchange insights on cultural preservation and urban development.

At the Huangshan scenic area, Jelena Medakovic, representing the Mayor of Belgrade, Serbia, observed the application of exoskeleton-assisted walking devices for mountain climbing, noting their efficiency and labor-saving benefits. She expressed admiration for Huangshan's model of conservation and growth, stating, "The use of technology here enhances the visitor experience while perfectly safeguarding the natural ecology and ancient villages. This balance between tradition and modernity is the key lesson we most wish to take back."

Filippo Gasperi, Mayor of Gradara, Italy, participated in a hands-on workshop crafting Huizhou-style fish lanterns. He remarked that the practical experience was far more valuable than viewing exhibits behind glass in a museum. "Making it yourself allows for a genuine understanding of the lantern's history and symbolism, leaving a deep impression," he said. Gasperi also noted that coastal regions in Italy similarly use fish as symbols of health and prosperity, highlighting how core symbols of traditional culture can create natural connections across different civilizations.

"Art knows no borders; culture belongs to all humanity," said Andrea Crescentini, Mayor of Serravalle, San Marino, after watching a performance of Hui opera in Hongcun Village, Huangshan. He mentioned that the Chinese community in San Marino often stages traditional Chinese operas, including Hui opera, during festivals. He was also captivated by other local cultural elements like Huizhou lacquerware and fish lanterns. "The beauty of different civilizations is inherently interconnected, and this trip to Huangshan has deeply reinforced that understanding for me. Upon returning, I will promote cultural exchanges and strengthen cooperation in areas such as the restoration of ancient towns," Crescentini added.

On the same day, Huangshan signed memoranda of understanding on friendly exchanges and cooperation with cities and institutions including Stralsund, Germany, and Gradara, Italy. These agreements aim to establish long-term collaborative mechanisms in cultural exchange, urban construction, and the integration of culture and tourism.
