OpenAI's Flagship GPT-5.6 AI Model to Debut Thursday After Clearing US Government Review

OpenAI is set to officially launch its most advanced artificial intelligence model, GPT-5.6, this Thursday. The release had been postponed last month at the request of the US government, which cited national security concerns over the potential misuse of powerful AI technology.

Experts have highlighted that such technology could significantly enhance capabilities for sophisticated cyberattacks, particularly in sectors reliant on highly interconnected and often decades-old technical systems.

Washington has intensified its scrutiny of releases involving advanced AI models to identify potential risks.

Reports which first broke the news of OpenAI's new model indicate that, following additional testing and multiple meetings with government officials, the Trump administration has greenlit the full public release of GPT-5.6.

Previously, OpenAI had only provided access to GPT-5.6 to a select group of vetted partners, with the list of these partners shared with relevant government authorities.

In a post on the X platform late Tuesday, OpenAI announced it will introduce its most powerful model, GPT-5.6 Sol, alongside the more cost-effective Terra and Luna models.
