China Southern Airlines reports wider first-half loss as costs outpace revenue growth

China Southern Airlines Co Ltd (HKG: 01055) has posted its interim results for the 2026 fiscal year, revealing a net loss attributable to equity holders of the company of RMB 3.699 billion, a substantial 141.13% year-on-year widening. The airline recorded operating revenue of RMB 94.679 billion for the period, representing a 9.72% increase compared to the prior year. Basic loss per share stood at RMB 0.20.

During the first half of 2026, the group's transport revenue climbed to RMB 90.244 billion, up 9.85% year-on-year, primarily driven by higher passenger and cargo revenue. Passenger revenue reached RMB 79.471 billion, an 8.76% increase, attributed to a rise in international traffic turnover during the reporting period. Cargo and mail revenue surged 18.65% to RMB 10.773 billion, fueled by an uptick in cargo traffic volume. Other operating revenue grew by 7.15% to RMB 4.435 billion, mainly due to higher ground handling service income.

Looking at its subsidiaries, Xiamen Airlines generated operating revenue of RMB 19.53 billion, a 3.61% increase year-on-year, while its net profit plummeted to RMB 35 million, compared with RMB 431 million in the same period last year. As of June 30, 2026, Xiamen Airlines held total assets of RMB 70.839 billion and net assets of RMB 21.434 billion. Meanwhile, China Southern Cargo delivered operating revenue of RMB 11.012 billion, up 17.16%, with net profit rising to RMB 1.906 billion from RMB 1.601 billion a year earlier. Its total assets and net assets stood at RMB 26.4 billion and RMB 21.734 billion, respectively, as of June 30, 2026.
