Novo Nordisk A/S announced intentions to introduce more than five blockbuster medications by 2030, aiming to maintain its edge in the fiercely competitive weight-loss treatment sector.
The pharmaceutical giant projected over 150 billion Danish kroner ($23 billion) in pipeline revenue by 2035, as revealed during its capital markets presentation on Monday. Despite this forecast, the company's stock tumbled as much as 6% in early market activity, with some investors anticipating more concrete growth projections.
"We acknowledge the need for intensified effort, and we are committed to it," stated Chief Executive Officer Mike Doustdar at the London investor gathering.
Novo pioneered the latest generation of potent therapies that transformed obesity into a more manageable condition. However, the company has lagged behind Eli Lilly & Co., having faced initial production shortfalls and a slower approach to direct consumer marketing compared to its American counterpart.
In his efforts to foster a more assertive corporate culture, Doustdar has streamlined staffing and management structures. Just last week, the firm simplified its name by dropping "Nordisk" from everyday usage to enhance brand recognition.
Still, Novo has encountered multiple setbacks in clinical trials, prompting some investors to question its future growth potential amidst rising generic competition for its top-selling products. The patents for Ozempic and Wegovy are scheduled to lapse in both European and US markets near the start of the coming decade.
Previously, Novo issued a warning that both earnings and revenue could decline by as much as 6% during the current year.
