China Plans a 27,000-Kilometer Outer Ring Highway

China is developing a monumental "outer ring road" spanning nearly 27,000 kilometers. On the country's transportation map, three ultra-long national highways are clearly visible: G219 runs vertically along the western border, G331 stretches across the northern frontier, and G228 connects the eastern coastline. When linked end-to-end, their total length equals about two-thirds of the Earth's equatorial circumference.

Recently, the Ministry of Transport officially announced that during the "15th Five-Year Plan" period (2026–2030), China will fully complete these three trunk routes, forming a "Golden Outer Ring" that integrates the border and coastal regions. This "Golden Outer Ring" is not being built simply for the sake of construction. During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, China's national comprehensive three-dimensional transportation network exceeded 6 million kilometers, with the main framework of "6 axes, 7 corridors, and 8 channels" reaching 91% completion. The scale and capacity of its comprehensive transportation infrastructure have firmly placed it in the global first tier.

The skeleton of the road network is already in place, so the next step is not about adding length, but about precision. As Xu Chengguang, Vice Minister of Transport, recently stated at a State Council press conference, during the "15th Five-Year Plan" period, advancing cross-regional and cross-basin major corridors will no longer simply involve "spreading resources" or "adding projects." Instead, the focus will be on optimizing spatial layout, unblocking the arteries of the economic cycle, and promoting balanced regional development. The "Golden Outer Ring" is a highly imaginative part of this round of optimization.
