Few could have imagined that just a few years ago, this place looked entirely different.

**Decision: An Urban Designer's Return to Nature**

Zhou Jinhua was once a prominent figure in Shanghai's design industry. However, in 2022, he made a surprising decision: to come to Wencheng, Wenzhou, and build a homestay deep in the mountains of Nanchuan Village.

Reality quickly presented challenges. Nanchuan Village is located in a remote mountainous area with narrow, pothole-filled roads and backward infrastructure. Most villagers make a living growing bayberries, with young people working away from home, leaving mostly elderly residents and children in the village.

"To get rich, build roads first" – this principle is especially urgent in mountainous areas. The work team collaborated with the village committees to plan improvements, deciding to use infrastructure enhancement as a breakthrough point to promote livelihood improvements and industrial revitalization.

In 2024, Zhejiang China Tobacco completed construction projects including turning lanes, guardrails, sidewalks, and stone steps in natural villages such as Maokeng and Fushouyuan. Narrow roads became wider, steep slopes gentler, and dark paths brighter.

Zhou Jinhua felt the impact deeply: "Last year, guests constantly complained about difficult roads; this year, with improved roads, orders have noticeably increased."

**Lighting Up: One Light Illuminates the Rural Industry Chain**

Zhou Jinhua's "Wuwai Valley" homestay not only attracts tourists but also revitalizes the rural economy. Cleaning staff, security guards, maintenance workers – the homestay employs local villagers; bayberries, honey, native chickens – tourists take home agricultural products from villagers' own farms. To date, the homestay has paid nearly 350,000 yuan in house rent and land rent to the village collective and residents.
