The 2026 summer travel period is proving to be a record-breaking season for Yunnan's aviation sector. As of August 18, data from Yunnan Aviation Industry Investment Group shows that airports across the province have collectively handled 85,000 aircraft movements since July 1, representing a 4.7% year-on-year increase. Passenger throughput has surged past 12.35 million, up 5.5% compared to the same period last year.
The scorching summer heat has fueled an extraordinary travel boom, with two significant milestones achieved during the peak period. On August 15, daily flight operations across the province surpassed 1,800 for the first time, while August 1 saw passenger numbers exceed 275,000 in a single day, both setting new all-time highs for the summer travel season.
Capitalizing on the region's unique "cool summer and mushroom fragrance" appeal, the aviation group has rolled out differentiated air-travel integration products to attract visitors. A special incentive program for summer throughput has been established, encouraging airlines to add capacity and optimize aircraft deployment, which has effectively energized the peak-season aviation tourism market.
Growth has been widespread, spanning both the core hub and regional airports. Kunming Changshui International Airport has added frequencies to 102 destinations, with particular emphasis on domestic trunk routes including Beijing Daxing, Shanghai Pudong, and Xi'an, as well as international connections to Chiang Mai, Yangon, and Seoul, significantly enhancing route connectivity and express network coverage.
The Xishuangbanna regional subsidiary has coordinated integrated operations across three airports in Xishuangbanna, Pu'er, and Lancang. July saw both year-on-year and month-on-month growth in overall passenger flow, with a notable increase in long-haul travelers. Lijiang Airport has repeatedly broken its own passenger records, surpassing the 5 million annual passenger milestone five days earlier than last year. Dali Airport has introduced multiple new routes, exceeding 500,000 monthly passengers and 20,800 daily travelers, with year-on-year growth rates above 30% for both flight movements and passenger numbers, ranking first among airports with annual throughput exceeding 2 million.
Mangshi Airport has seized the opportunities presented by summer tourism and study tours, restoring and expanding popular domestic routes while launching summer study-tour air travel products. The airport achieved historic highs in both monthly flight numbers and passenger volume, with load factors ranking among the top nationally. Wenshan Airport has resumed transit routes via Kunming and leveraged comprehensive marketing initiatives to boost group travel, with steadily improving load factors.
The group has implemented a comprehensive marketing strategy under its core brand of "Living in Yunnan, Traveling by Air." Online, it has established a province-wide promotional matrix, collaborating with airlines, online travel agencies, and airports in other provinces to host multiple cross-regional livestreaming events, generating over 10 million impressions across social media platforms. Individual airports have introduced diverse products tailored to local characteristics, including study tours, family travel, summer retreats, and wellness programs, alongside exclusive discounts for students and senior citizens, as well as "show your boarding pass for scenic area discounts" initiatives.
Offline efforts have included targeted tourism promotion events in major source markets such as Shandong, school campus visits, and collaborations with local tourism departments to cultivate first-time flyers and continuously tap into out-of-province passenger growth. Looking ahead, the group remains committed to ensuring smooth summer operations, advancing province-wide air-tourism integration marketing, and developing a "one airport, one feature" brand strategy. Plans include upgrading ground-air intermodal transport and accessible care services, maximizing the summer traffic window, and striving toward annual passenger and cargo targets to drive high-quality development of Yunnan's cultural tourism industry.
