Singapore Surpasses Indonesia to Become Southeast Asia's Largest Stock Market

Indonesia's capital markets have encountered a series of unfavorable developments, with the latest being overtaken by Singapore, losing its position as the largest stock market in Southeast Asia. Aggregate data shows that the total market capitalization of Indonesian listed companies has fallen to $618 billion from its January peak, while the total market capitalization of the Singapore stock market has risen to $645 billion. Investment sentiment in the Indonesian market has remained subdued in recent months. On one hand, there are concerns that the country's stock index may be downgraded to frontier market status. On the other hand, both Fitch and Moody's have revised their credit rating outlooks for Indonesia to negative. Currently, Indonesia's stock index performance ranks at the bottom among major global markets, and the Indonesian rupiah has repeatedly hit record lows. Lion City Global Investment Fund Manager Soh Chih Kai noted that while the Indonesian market is currently in an unfavorable position, there remains potential for recovery in the future. He stated, "Amid global policy uncertainties, capital continues to favor markets with stability and certainty, further solidifying the relative advantages of the Singapore stock market."
