Nikkei Asia reported today that Japanese and American officials are currently in discussions regarding the construction of a semiconductor fabrication facility within the United States, with funding coming from Japan.

The proposed project is estimated to carry a total value ranging between 2 and 3 trillion yen, which translates to approximately 86.3 to 129.5 billion yuan at current exchange rates. GlobalFoundries is expected to serve as the operator, with the facility designated for producing logic semiconductors.

This potential chip plant forms part of Japan's broader commitment to invest a total of 550 billion US dollars in the U.S., a figure equivalent to roughly 3.7 trillion yuan, which was pledged under previous tariff-related agreements. Officials from both nations convened working-level talks earlier this week, spanning Monday and Tuesday, during which the American side raised inquiries about the feasibility of establishing such a chip manufacturing project. The conversations also touched upon projections for return on investment and other related topics.
