Revenue Soars, Profit Stalls: What Is Going On With CATL?

Deep News

CATL's problem is not orders or shipments, but how much it earns per kilowatt-hour. In the third quarter of 2026, revenue reached a quarterly record high, volumes kept growing rapidly, yet unit profit fell to near a historical low. Market focus on this battery leader is shifting from growth speed to profit quality.

After the market close on October 20, CATL released third-quarter results. Revenue was about RMB 165.2 billion, up around 59% year on year and around 12% quarter on quarter, with shipments exceeding 260GWh, broadly in line with or slightly above sell-side expectations. However, net profit attributable to shareholders was about RMB 21.2 billion, up around 15% year on year but down around 6% quarter on quarter, missing already-lowered buy-side expectations.

The profit shortfall quickly became the consensus in research notes. According to a trading desk, Goldman Sachs said CATL's third-quarter unit net profit fell to RMB 82/kWh, below its expectation of RMB 93/kWh. JPMorgan, UBS and Jefferies also attributed the profit deceleration to a weaker product mix, consumption tax impact, lower export tax rebates and inventory write-downs, among other factors.

The market had already priced in some concerns. JPMorgan noted that over the past two months, CATL's A-shares and H-shares had pulled back 33% to 35%, while the CSI 300 fell about 10% over the same period. Investment banks broadly believe the key variable for the stock going forward is not whether demand exists, but whether the tax burden can be passed through, when energy storage system integration revenue will be recognized, and whether unit profit can stabilize.

Growth is still accelerating, and revenue has not stalled

Looking at revenue and shipments, CATL remains on a high-growth trajectory.

CATL's third-quarter revenue was RMB 165.2 billion, up 58.6% year on year and 11.8% quarter on quarter. For the first three quarters, revenue reached RMB 442.1 billion, up 56.2% year on year. Third-quarter shipments of EV and energy storage batteries combined exceeded 260GWh, up 44.4% year on year and 13.0% quarter on quarter.

In terms of mix, the share of energy storage continued to rise. JPMorgan estimated that energy storage accounted for about one quarter of total battery sales in the third quarter, while EV batteries accounted for about three quarters. Jefferies said energy storage accounted for about 25%, up from 18% in 2025. This shows CATL's growth does not rely solely on power batteries, and energy storage has become an important incremental driver.

But the revenue recognition rhythm has also become more complicated. Both Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan mentioned that overseas AC-side energy storage projects usually require grid connection acceptance, and the revenue recognition cycle may take six to twelve months. This means some high-value system integration projects have been shipped but remain in inventory as goods shipped, not yet fully reflected in the income statement.

Profit pressure centers on declining unit profitability

The four investment banks' core judgment on third-quarter results was highly consistent: strong revenue, weak profit.

CATL's third-quarter gross margin was 20.7%, down 5.1 percentage points year on year and down 2.5 percentage points quarter on quarter. Goldman Sachs said this gross margin was 3.8 percentage points below its expectation. The EBIT margin fell to 13.2%, and the net margin fell to 12.9%.

The change in unit profit was even more direct. Goldman Sachs said third-quarter unit net profit was RMB 82/kWh, below RMB 112/kWh in the third quarter of 2025 and below RMB 97/kWh in the second quarter of 2026. JPMorgan estimated CATL's third-quarter unit net profit at about RMB 0.08/Wh, below the previous level of about RMB 0.10/Wh.

Management attributed the decline in unit profit to three factors. First, an unfavorable product mix, with more low-value-added and relatively simple-to-manufacture projects delivered in the third quarter. Second, a 2% battery consumption tax effective from September brought additional costs. Third, the impact of lower export VAT rebates was more fully reflected in the third quarter, while the second quarter reflected only part of it.

Jefferies also noted that higher research and development spending and inventory write-downs caused by lithium carbonate price volatility weighed on profit performance. Third-quarter R&D expenses were RMB 7.14 billion, up 43.6% year on year. Asset impairment losses rose to about RMB 1.89 billion, mainly related to inventory provisions.

Whether the tax burden can be passed through is the biggest short-term variable

Changes in consumption tax and export tax rebates are among the profit variables the market is watching most closely.

JPMorgan said the third quarter reflected only one month of consumption tax impact, while the fourth quarter will bear the full quarter's impact. If the tax burden pass-through remains insufficient, profitability could continue to come under pressure in the fourth quarter.

Management said it is negotiating item by item with customers on cost sharing arising from consumption tax and export tax rebate changes, but the outcomes of these negotiations are not yet fully reflected in the financial statements. JPMorgan noted that until new commercial arrangements are reached, the new tax burden cannot be fully passed on and will still show up in CATL's own profit.

Goldman Sachs assumed in its model that CATL will bear the full consumption tax impact for the remainder of this year and will share the costs of consumption tax and export tax rebate changes with customers starting in 2027. On that basis, Goldman Sachs cut its 2026 to 2028 earnings per share forecasts by 4% to 7%.

UBS made a larger adjustment. UBS cut its 2026 to 2028 net profit forecasts by 11% to 14%, to RMB 90.2 billion to RMB 131.5 billion, citing lower unit profit, inventory write-downs and the consumption tax impact.

Cash flow worsened in the short term, but management calls it a proactive arrangement

Beyond the income statement, cash flow also showed clear volatility.

Goldman Sachs said CATL's third-quarter operating cash inflow fell to RMB 1.409 billion, below the prior quarterly range of RMB 20 billion to RMB 30 billion. Capital expenditure rose 35% quarter on quarter and 73% year on year to RMB 17.095 billion, turning free cash flow negative at about RMB 15.686 billion.

Management explained that the decline in cash flow mainly came from a proactive increase in prepayments, shorter payment terms for upstream suppliers, and support for supplier capacity expansion to match strong downstream demand. JPMorgan said management expects the related working capital impact to persist for another two to three quarters, after which operating cash flow is expected to return to healthy levels.

Inventory also continued to rise. Jefferies data showed inventory at the end of the third quarter rose 11% quarter on quarter to RMB 144.8 billion. Investment banks broadly believe this reflects both larger shipment scale and the longer delivery cycle of overseas AC-side energy storage projects, with more goods shipped and materials in transit.

Management bets on three repair paths

CATL management remains positive on demand.

Both Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan said management expects future global battery demand growth of 20% to 30%. On power batteries, the domestic passenger vehicle market is under overall pressure, but rising new energy penetration, higher battery capacity per vehicle and electrification of commercial vehicles will still support demand. Overseas, management expects limited growth in the United States, but electrification in Europe will still advance.

On energy storage, management acknowledged uncertainty in domestic energy storage demand but remains confident about overseas demand. Jefferies said overseas energy storage demand is supported by energy security and electricity demand from AI computing centers. Goldman Sachs believes the market may underestimate the profit improvement from CATL's transition to energy storage system integration, though related revenue recognition takes time.

Battery swapping was also seen by several investment banks as a strategic tool for CATL to cope with profit pressure. JPMorgan said management repeatedly emphasized battery swapping, sodium-ion batteries and next-generation products, rather than relying solely on battery price increases. Goldman Sachs mentioned that CATL's chocolate battery swap network has covered 31 provincial-level regions, with 2,500 stations and a target of more than 3,000 by year-end. The company is also advancing a battery swap ecosystem for heavy trucks.

On overseas capacity, management said the 14GWh plant in Germany and the first-phase 39GWh project in Hungary have begun production, while the 50GWh project in Spain is progressing steadily. Goldman Sachs believes overseas capacity and customer development are still advancing as planned.

The four investment banks differ on the speed of recovery

What the four research notes share is that CATL remains one of the companies in the industry best able to withstand cyclical pressure. The disagreement is how long profit recovery will take and whether valuations have fully reflected the risks.

Goldman Sachs maintained a buy rating and cut its 12-month target prices for A-shares and H-shares to RMB 507 and HKD 777, respectively, from RMB 559 and HKD 859. Goldman Sachs believes the stock has over-reflected demand and tax burden risks, while the market underestimates CATL's ability as a global leader to cope with pressure.

JPMorgan was more cautious. It maintained a neutral rating on CATL's H-shares and an overweight rating on A-shares, cut its 2026 and 2027 earnings forecasts by 4% and 6% to RMB 86.3 billion and RMB 93.9 billion, and lowered its 2027 unit net profit assumption to RMB 0.075/Wh from RMB 0.08/Wh. JPMorgan expects sentiment and the share price may remain under pressure while earnings expectations continue to be reset.

UBS maintained a buy rating on H-shares but cut its target price to HKD 730 from HKD 820. UBS said management's confidence in the volume outlook is stronger than its confidence in unit profit, and the industry's 20% to 30% growth target for 2027 still looks achievable.

Jefferies maintained a buy rating on A-shares with a target price of RMB 535, but warned that consensus earnings forecasts may still be revised down further. It said that if 2027 unit profit and earnings forecasts are cut by 10%, CATL's A-share and H-share 2027 price-to-earnings ratios could rise to 12 times and 16 times from about 10 times and 14 times.

What investors really need to watch is not just sales volume

The signal CATL's third quarter sent to the market is not one-dimensional.

On one hand, demand remains strong, revenue hit a record high, and overseas expansion and energy storage system integration still offer medium- to long-term room. On the other hand, product mix, tax burden, export tax rebates, inventory write-downs and cash flow changes are compressing short-term profit elasticity.

Therefore, soaring revenue and stalling profit is not a story of collapsing demand, but a profit recalibration driven by business model upgrading, repricing of the tax burden and a longer revenue recognition cycle. In the coming quarters, the market will focus on three things: whether the tax burden can be smoothly shared with customers, whether high-value energy storage system revenue can be recognized, and whether unit net profit can recover from the third-quarter low.
