The latest research report from CICC highlights that despite the typical lull of the April-to-June period, the movie industry saw box office revenue (including service fees) rise by 13% year-on-year, driven by strong content offerings. Most film companies reported revenue growth during this window, with their net losses also narrowing compared to the same timeframe last year. The 2026 summer season concluded with box office earnings of 12.5 billion yuan including service fees, a 4.4% increase from the prior year.

Q2 2026 Performance: Market Recovery Amidst Cost Discipline

According to data from Enlight Media, the national film market generated 5.48 billion yuan in box office revenue including service fees during the second quarter, marking a 13% year-on-year uptick. While this quarter is traditionally considered an off-peak period for the industry and online entertainment continues to siphon away audiences, premium content remains the decisive factor in driving ticket sales. Several film companies posted narrower-than-expected losses for the period, which the brokerage attributes to stricter cost and expense controls, as firms persist in streamlining operations and boosting efficiency.

2026 Summer Box Office: Sales Reach 12.5 Billion Yuan

Box office receipts for the summer season, inclusive of service fees, totalled 12.5 billion yuan, matching the firm's projection of a 110-140 billion yuan range. Attendance climbed 5.8% to 341 million viewers, while the average ticket price slipped 1.4% to 36.73 yuan, underscoring a continued strategy of leveraging lower prices to drive volume. The top three films by revenue were Kung Fu Women's Football, Welcome to the Dragon Restaurant, and The Eight Immortals. According to Maoyan Professional Edition, the average age of summer moviegoers rose to 32.6 years old, 0.8 years older than the prior season. Looking ahead, industry attention turns to the release schedules of domestic titles such as Flowers Turn and The Wandering Earth 3, alongside imported blockbusters including Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday. While audience preferences evolve rapidly and promotional reach becomes increasingly challenging, the quality of content remains the fundamental catalyst for box office performance.

AI Integration and Diversified Theatre Operations Under the Spotlight

Progress in applying artificial intelligence across the film production pipeline is already surfacing. Ruyi Films and China Film Co. have established AI system frameworks, while Bona Film Group's AI-generated feature Sanxingdui: Future Memories has secured its distribution license. On the diversification front, leading studios are leveraging their cinema networks to develop offline entertainment formats and expand concession offerings. The brokerage believes such business model diversification could generate incremental profit streams. Investors are advised to monitor the rollout timeline for marquee AI-driven content and the tangible outcomes of cinema-based diversification initiatives. Key risks include insufficient content supply, underwhelming box office performance for major releases, piracy, and tighter regulatory oversight.
