The competition between leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers has escalated into a public dispute over technical specifications and performance claims.

Li Auto Inc. (LI) and NIO Inc. (NIO) have engaged in a heated exchange concerning the suspension systems of their flagship models. The conflict began when Li Auto's official mini-program released a comparison video on June 5th, showcasing the suspension performance of its L9 Livis model against the NIO ES9 on a wavy road surface. The video suggested the Li Auto vehicle demonstrated superior stability, while the NIO model appeared more turbulent.

Although the video was quickly removed, it drew a sharp response from NIO's management. Ma Lin, a Vice President at NIO, publicly questioned the video's authenticity on social media, pointing out inconsistencies in the ES9's suspension behavior shown and demanding clarification on the test conditions and settings from Li Auto.

Li Auto swiftly countered. Tang Jing, President of Li Auto's First Product Line, responded online, framing the internal video as an effort to understand a specific technical claim made by NIO's founder, William Li, regarding suspension technology.

Roots of the Technical Debate

This recent clash is set against the backdrop of both companies launching similarly positioned, premium-priced flagship SUVs: the Li Auto L9 Livis and the NIO ES9. As competition intensifies in China's crowded new energy vehicle sector, these once-friendly rivals are now vying more aggressively for market leadership.

The focus on chassis and suspension technology highlights a strategic shift. Having largely converged on core areas like electric drivetrains and smart cabins, automakers are now seeking differentiation through advanced chassis engineering. Li Auto's founder, Li Xiang, recently stated that chassis technology could be the final hurdle for Chinese automakers to dominate globally.

Both companies are promoting distinct technological paths. NIO's ES9 features a 48V integrated full-active suspension, which the company claims offers faster response times. Conversely, Li Auto's L9 Livis employs an 800V active suspension system, touted for greater power output and enhanced handling during dynamic maneuvers.

Underlying Financial Motivations

Beyond the technical debate, the public sparring reflects significant performance pressures facing both firms. Li Auto, the first among its peers to achieve profitability, has seen its momentum challenged. Its foray into pure electric vehicles stumbled with the MEGA model, contributing to consecutive quarterly operating losses since Q3 2024 and a decline in annual deliveries. The high-end L9 series is now a critical component of its recovery strategy.

For NIO, the ES9 represents a crucial step toward sustainable profitability. After years of heavy losses linked to its battery-swap infrastructure investments, NIO has recently posted consecutive quarters of positive operating profit, aided by its multi-brand strategy. The company views the high-margin ES9 as essential for funding further R&D and network expansion, creating a virtuous cycle to support ambitious sales growth targets.

The public dispute over suspension technology, therefore, is more than a technical disagreement; it is a manifestation of the intense battle for supremacy, profitability, and technological leadership in China's high-stakes EV market.
