Chip Stocks Near Bull-Market Territory. Why Some Analysts Are Nervous

Bellwether Stocks Movement

Chip stocks are closing in on bull market territory, fueled by strong earnings from AI infrastructure companies. Nvidia and Micron are leading the rally, while the PHLX Semiconductor Index is nearing 12,400 points. But analysts are warning that stock prices may be moving faster than the underlying fundamentals

The latest momentum came from CoreWeave, Super Micro Computer, and Lumentum. Their results showed that AI infrastructure spending remains strong, supporting the broader chip rally. But CoreWeave also raised its annual capital spending plan to 35 to 39 billion dollars, raising questions about how quickly those investments can generate returns

The bigger concern is profitability. CoreWeave reported 640 million dollars in net interest expense, compared with only 128 million dollars in adjusted operating income. That gap highlights the cost of financing the AI buildout. Investors are also questioning huge order backlogs, such as Super Micro Computer's more than 60 billion dollars in new orders

Analysts warn that backlogs are not guaranteed revenue. Orders can be delayed or canceled if AI demand slows. Heavy spending could then become a financial burden instead of a growth engine. At the same time, the AI trade is broadening beyond GPU makers, with optical networking and data center companies such as Lumentum and Coherent also showing strong demand

This broader participation suggests the AI boom is entering a larger infrastructure cycle. But the key question is whether actual AI consumption is growing fast enough to justify current valuations. Stable inflation and strong earnings are supporting the rally, but investors increasingly need evidence of real end-user demand rather than simply more data centers and equipment

The bottom line is that the chip rally is real, but so are the risks. Strong backlogs and rising AI spending are encouraging, yet massive capital commitments could become a problem if demand slows. As the sector approaches bull market territory, investors will need to focus less on momentum and more on actual revenue, cash flow, and AI consumption
