First Annual Loss in 78 Years Forces Historic Outsourcing: Honda Partners with Tata Technologies for New Vehicle Platform to Cut Costs

Honda Motor Co. has outsourced the development of a new vehicle platform to Tata Technologies Ltd., marking the first time the Japanese automaker has hired an Indian engineering services firm for an end-to-end project, according to people familiar with the matter. The move is aimed at significantly reducing costs as the company grapples with its first annual net loss since its founding in 1948.

The platform is expected to support multiple models and be compatible with traditional internal combustion engines, as well as electrified options like hybrids and battery-electric vehicles, the people said, declining to specify which markets the vehicles designed by Tata Technologies will be sold in. Outsourcing development of a core vehicle platform — a key function Honda has historically kept largely in-house or within its existing supplier network — represents a major shift for the company.

The decision comes as Honda overhauls its product roadmap, having shelved several electric vehicle plans and accelerated cost-cutting measures. A Honda spokesperson said in an email that the company is "always evaluating various external collaboration possibilities to enhance competitiveness," but declined to comment on market rumors or specific partnership details. A Tata Technologies spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In India, speed is also critical for Honda. The company's outdated and thin product lineup has left it trailing rivals such as Maruti Suzuki India and Toyota Motor in a market it has identified as key alongside Japan and North America. While Honda currently does not sell battery-electric vehicles in India, domestic giants Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra have already launched multiple models to gain an edge. Honda's share of India's market, the world's third-largest, has shrunk to less than 2% from a peak of over 7% a decade ago.

Honda has previously developed some models with partners like General Motors, such as the recently discontinued Prologue and Acura ZDX. But this is the first time it has commissioned an Indian engineering services firm to create an entirely new vehicle platform.

India's Growing Role

The partnership also highlights India's rising prominence as a global automotive engineering hub, with more foreign automakers — from Mercedes-Benz and BMW to now Honda — outsourcing vehicle development to shorten research cycles and cut costs. Tata Technologies CEO Warren Harris told analysts in July that the company was working on "a full vehicle development program with a leading Japanese OEM," without naming Honda.

Tata Technologies, part of the Tata Group, provides engineering and digital services to automotive, aerospace, and industrial clients. The collaboration with Honda marks a major breakthrough, opening up a customer base that has traditionally been difficult to penetrate.

For Honda, the decision reflects a deep rethink of its future vehicle development model. In May, company President Toshihiro Mibe said the company would "use external resources more flexibly and strategically," citing the cost competitiveness and development speed offered by engineering talent in India and China as it adapts to an increasingly uncertain global market. Honda has announced plans to launch a new vehicle lineup in India starting in 2028, while also expanding the country's role as a manufacturing and export hub for markets in Latin America and Southeast Asia.
