French automaker Renault SA (RNLSY.US) is actively advancing plans to assist in national defense efforts. This initiative unfolds against a backdrop of escalating geopolitical tensions, as Europe seeks to counter threats from the United States concerning Greenland. In an email statement released Monday evening, the company announced, "Approached by the French Ministry of the Armed Forces, the Renault Group has been invited to contribute its expertise to the development of France's drone industry." The automaker, renowned for popular models like the Renault 5 and Scenic, will collaborate with French aerospace and defense contractor Turgis Gaillard on the project, which will be overseen by the French Ministry of Defense.

Despite lingering uncertainties in the French budget, President Emmanuel Macron last week called for increased military spending to address growing global threats. On January 15th, Macron stated that the requested funding would provide an additional 36 billion euros ($42 billion) in resources by 2030 for a "transformative scaling up" of the French military. According to earlier French media reports, Renault will assign its factories located in Cléon and Le Mans to participate in the project. However, Renault clarified in its statement that it cannot yet specify which French plants will be involved in the drone program, as consultations with labor unions must be conducted first.
