Young Innovators Dominate Low-Altitude Economy Competition, Over 90% Eye Wuxi Expansion

A recent industry event focused on the low-altitude economy has sparked a wave of youthful energy, with the vast majority of participating teams showing strong interest in establishing operations in Wuxi. The 2026 Jiangsu "Youth Innovation" Low-Altitude Economy (Wuxi) Industry Chain Competition finals recently concluded in Yixing, showcasing 27 standout projects. Reports indicate that more than 90% of the competing teams have expressed a clear intention to develop their ventures in the Wuxi area.

Unlike comprehensive innovation contests that span multiple sectors, this particular competition was exclusively dedicated to the low-altitude economy. The participating projects covered a diverse range of categories, including complete low-altitude aircraft, intelligent flight control systems, onboard sensors, agricultural and forestry plant protection, emergency inspection, and low-altitude tourism. A notable number of project leaders are still enrolled as university students, bringing laboratory-developed technologies directly to the pitch stage in search of investment, application scenarios, and collaborative partners.

The first-place winner in the innovation category was the "Wing Core Sky Patrol" project from Shandong University. Team member Li Bohan explained that under the guidance of their professors, the group began developing a nuclear radiation measuring instrument in 2022. This device is capable of detecting multiple particle types simultaneously and can also utilize spatial positioning to approximate the location of radioactive sources. This innovation addresses a critical need for safety and monitoring applications.

In the entrepreneurship category, third-place project leader Shang Jin presented a drone equipped with a 360-degree protective structure. The narrowest sections inside wind turbine blades measure only 30 to 40 centimeters, limiting the reach of human workers and climbing robots, while standard drones are prone to signal interference, drifting, and collisions in such environments. To tackle this challenge, the team independently developed both hardware and software, including power control systems and underlying algorithms, enabling the drone to operate safely within tight, enclosed spaces.

The youthfulness of the participants left a strong impression on Shang Jin. He noted that some competitors were only in their sophomore year yet displayed remarkably high project maturity, commenting that the momentum of this "new wave" of talent is exceptionally powerful. Data from the competition reveals that over 70% of participants were born after 1990, more than half were born after 2000, over 70% of the lead creators come from "Double First-Class" universities, and more than 70% of the projects originated from outside Jiangsu province.

This trend indicates that a growing number of young researchers and university students are choosing the low-altitude economy as their primary arena for technological innovation and entrepreneurial pursuits. While the young teams brought technical expertise and creative ideas, Wuxi offered its robust industrial base, practical application scenarios, and capital resources to facilitate collaboration. Zhang Jin, deputy general manager of the Wuxi Taihu Bay Science and Technology Innovation City Venture Capital Management Company, initially identified two or three projects with potential for further engagement during the event.

In his view, industry-chain competitions aggregate projects from the same field, allowing investment institutions to complete their first round of screening more efficiently and helping enterprises discover the technologies and products they require with greater ease. On the day of the finals, the competition established three types of matchmaking: project pairing, industry scenario pairing, and financial credit pairing. Additionally, six young technology managers and seven young investment managers were appointed to provide ongoing services to the participating projects, including technology commercialization, investment and financing connections, and business incubation support.

As a key incentive, the first-prize projects will receive direct entry to the finals of the 7th Yixing Taihu Bay International Elite Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.
