Italian energy major Eni and Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC) have commenced production at the Sabratha compression project, a development designed to sustain and enhance natural gas output from the Bahr Essalam field.

The project is being advanced through the Mellitah Oil & Gas joint venture. Located offshore approximately 100 kilometers from the coast, it involves the installation of a new 1,600-ton compression module on the Sabratha platform. This module is equipped with new compression units, providing a total compression capacity of around 440 million standard cubic feet per day.

Eni stated that the new facility will enable production under low-pressure conditions, offsetting the natural decline of the Bahr Essalam field and adding approximately 800 million cubic meters per year of natural gas along with associated condensate. The additional production will support power generation in Libya and enable exports to Italy via the Greenstream pipeline.

The two companies are also progressing two other projects in Libya: the Bouri Gas Utilization project and the Structures A&E project, which aims to bring two offshore gas fields into production.

Eni has been operating in Libya since 1959, with its production in the country averaging about 162,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2025. The company noted it currently has three development projects underway in Libya, representing a total investment of approximately $10 billion.
