Fuel Prices Set to Rise: What Drivers Need to Know

Mark your calendars for September 11th at midnight, as this will trigger the 18th fuel price adjustment of the year. This comes on the heels of a significant surge in international oil prices observed on September 9th, driven by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

International benchmarks saw substantial gains, with New York Mercantile Exchange light sweet crude for October delivery climbing $3.02, or 3.25%, to settle at $96.05 per barrel. Simultaneously, London Brent crude for November delivery rose $3.29, or 3.36%, to close at $101.21 per barrel. This upward momentum is largely attributed to increased risk premiums in the oil market, stemming from heightened concerns over shipping safety in the Strait of Hormuz amid the regional conflict.

Given the synchronized surge in global and domestic oil prices this week, market projections indicate that gasoline and diesel are slated for an increase of approximately 160 yuan and 155 yuan per tonne, respectively. For consumers at the pump, this translates to an estimated hike of 0.13 yuan per liter for 92-octane gasoline, 0.14 yuan per liter for 95-octane, and 0.13 yuan per liter for 0-diesel. Consequently, filling up a standard 50-liter tank is expected to cost drivers an additional 6.5 to 7 yuan.

Please note that the mentioned percentages and figures are preliminary estimates based on institutional calculations and forecasts. The final adjustment magnitude will be determined and announced by the official authorities.

For those looking to mitigate the impact, consider adopting fuel-efficient driving habits such as maintaining steady speeds and ensuring proper tire inflation.
