The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has lifted its benchmark interest rate for a second consecutive meeting, signaling a deliberate move toward a less accommodative policy stance as it seeks to alleviate inflation pressures. On Wednesday, the monetary policy committee raised the official cash rate by 25 basis points to 2.75%, a decision that aligned with the forecasts of every economist surveyed by Bloomberg.

According to the central bank's latest projections, there is potential for one more quarter-point increase before the end of this year. In its post-meeting statement, the bank noted that a gradual withdrawal of monetary stimulus is appropriate to bring inflation back to the midpoint of its 2% target band while continuing to support economic growth and employment. It added that future moves will depend on the committee's assessment of the medium-term balance of inflation risks.

The New Zealand dollar weakened in the wake of the rate announcement, slipping as much as 0.7% against the US dollar to 0.5852. Meanwhile, the yield on the nation's two-year government bonds remained relatively steady, holding at 3.64%.
