On September 25, according to foreign media outlet Carscoops, Mercedes-Benz has further deepened its cooperation with Taiwanese company ProLogium Technology, aiming to advance the application of advanced solid-state battery technology in the automotive sector.

Under the cooperation agreement, Mercedes-Benz will prioritize testing ProLogium Technology's fourth-generation battery cells.

Solid-state batteries have long been regarded as the "holy grail" of battery technology. Traditional lithium-ion batteries use liquid electrolytes, while solid-state batteries use non-flammable solid materials, enabling higher energy density and faster charging speeds while also improving safety and extending service life.

Mercedes-Benz, along with Chinese and international automakers such as BYD, Chery, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Volkswagen, and Stellantis, are all actively developing and testing solid-state batteries for next-generation pure electric vehicles, with some products expected to enter the market within the next 12 months.

According to the agreement between the two parties, Mercedes-Benz will conduct electrical performance, thermal performance, and safety tests on ProLogium Technology's fourth-generation lithium ceramic battery cells at its own facilities and third-party testing institutions. These batteries use ceramic separators and non-flammable inorganic electrolytes, which are said to enable both fast charging and high power output.

ProLogium Technology also plans to build a factory in Dunkirk, France, with a maximum production capacity of 44GWh. ProLogium Technology states that the Dunkirk factory will help the company supply battery cells to customers across Europe, with Mercedes-Benz among them.

In addition to ProLogium Technology, Mercedes-Benz has another important solid-state battery partner and is testing lithium metal battery cells developed by American company Factorial Energy. Last year, a Mercedes-Benz EQS equipped with a Factorial Energy solid-state battery pack traveled 1,205 kilometers on a single charge. At the end of the test, the vehicle still had remaining range, and Mercedes-Benz stated that it estimated approximately 137 kilometers of remaining range at that time.
