Japanese Retail Traders Defy Yen Rally With Record-Breaking Short Bets

Japanese retail investors are wagering that the recent sharp appreciation of the yen is unsustainable, aggressively expanding their bearish positions even as the currency climbs to multi-month highs. Data from the Japan Financial Futures Association and the Tokyo Financial Exchange reveals that net short positions held by individual investors reached an estimated 3.61 trillion yen ($23.5 billion) last week, surpassing levels seen in August.

This latest buildup in bearish bets comes close to the 4.41 trillion yen peak recorded in July, which marked the highest level since 2015. Japanese retail traders have long favored a contrarian approach, selling the yen when it strengthens and buying when it weakens. This behavior stands in stark contrast to foreign investors, who have been rapidly unwinding yen-funded carry trades amid the currency's surge.

Hedge funds have similarly positioned for further yen appreciation, with some institutions even forecasting the dollar-yen pair to break below the 150 threshold by year-end. Masayuki Nakajima, a senior strategist at Mizuho Bank, noted that if the yen continues its upward trajectory, these retail investors could eventually be compelled to close their dollar-long positions, triggering a wave of stop-loss selling that might inadvertently accelerate the yen's advance.

The yen has strengthened approximately 4% against the dollar this month, briefly breaking through the 153 level. Demand for the Japanese currency has been fueled by expectations of further monetary policy tightening from the Bank of Japan, coupled with speculation that domestic pension funds may be adjusting their asset allocations. The recent breach of several key technical levels has also triggered substantial stop-loss orders, adding further momentum to the rally.
