Gates Foundation and AI Leaders Set Five-Year Goal to Bring Voice and Language AI to Over Three Billion Users

The Gates Foundation, together with a broad coalition of organizations across the global AI ecosystem, has announced a joint commitment aimed at closing one of the most significant accessibility gaps in artificial intelligence: enabling people everywhere to safely and effectively use AI services in the languages they use every day. The first group of 60 signatories includes major players such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Nvidia, representing a wide cross-section of the global AI landscape.

Bill Gates, Chair of the Gates Foundation, stressed the importance of ensuring AI tools can serve everyone and support the languages people actually speak. He noted that even some African languages that receive relatively better support still lack adequate representation in AI systems. When AI tools cannot understand a person's everyday language, a single error could lead to serious consequences. Gates expressed confidence that with the right leadership and momentum, this problem can be resolved in a relatively short timeframe.

Currently, out of roughly 7,000 languages spoken worldwide, only a very small fraction have sufficient data and resources to power mature AI capabilities. Many other languages are categorized as "low-resource," meaning they are underrepresented in the datasets, tools, and benchmarks that AI development and testing depend on. As a result, speakers of these languages, including many who already struggle to fully benefit from existing technologies, may encounter lower accuracy, limited usefulness, or systems that simply fail to grasp their actual ways of expressing themselves.

This challenge goes beyond mere text translation. Voice technology is especially critical in situations where typing or using text-based interfaces is inconvenient or difficult, as it allows people to interact with AI directly through natural speech. The implications of language inadequacy extend far beyond simple inconvenience. Dialects, slang, idioms, and cultural context can all shift the meaning of what is being communicated, and in high-stakes scenarios where accuracy is paramount, these differences could have severe consequences.

Bridging this gap has the potential to make AI-powered information and services far more accessible and effective for billions of people, with far-reaching benefits across sectors including healthcare, education, agriculture, financial services, and public services.
