The story centers on a woman named Jin Jun, born in 1989. She was meant to have a childhood filled with schooling and reading, but her life took a drastic turn in the winter of 1994. At just five years old, while traveling at night with her mute mother, they were forcibly taken by two unknown men, abducted and sold into a rural village in Shanxi Province. After being resold multiple times, they were eventually taken in by a family surnamed Han.

In her new home, Jin Jun was forced to change her name and, from a young age, labored under heavy farm work and household chores, missing out on any chance for an education. The days of living under someone else's roof were filled with torment. The inability to confide in her mother and the distant bond with her foster father left her childhood steeped in loneliness.
