According to a report today, Samsung Electronics has revealed that pre-orders for its new generation of foldable phones are off to a strong start, with the Galaxy Z Fold8, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip8 poised to potentially set new records for the Galaxy Z series. On Wednesday local time, Samsung data showed that pre-orders for the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra surged 30% compared to the same period last year, with the Fold8 accounting for nearly half of all orders. Although the new devices have not yet officially launched, consumers are already showing strong approval for Samsung's attempt to alter the foldable screen's aspect ratio. Drew Blackard, Senior Vice President of Mobile Product Management at Samsung Electronics America, stated, "Seeing such a strong start for the Galaxy Z series with its new form factor is truly exciting. We are also pleased to see the foldable phone market continuing to grow."

The three new models will go on sale officially on August 7. Samsung's decision to highlight its pre-order performance now comes just weeks before it faces a more formidable competitor. Apple plans to launch its long-awaited foldable iPhone in September, with a form factor similar to the Fold8. Meanwhile, Google is also set to unveil the Pixel 11 Pro Fold on August 12, though its design will be more elongated, approaching the direction of the Fold8 Ultra. Samsung is emphasizing the Fold8's wider and shorter internal display, arguing that the new aspect ratio is better suited for watching video content and reading e-books. Apple's entry into the market is expected to significantly expand the foldable phone segment. Currently, foldable phones still represent a small fraction of global smartphone sales, with a market size that remains limited compared to more affordable traditional flagship models like the Galaxy S26 Ultra and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The U.S. foldable phone market has previously been dominated by Samsung, with Google and Motorola trailing significantly. However, given Apple's formidable marketing capabilities and vast iPhone user base, Samsung will face much stiffer competition going forward. The buzz around the Fold8 also appears to be diverting users from Samsung's own Flip series. Samsung noted that compared to previous generations, the number of users switching from the Flip series to the Fold8 or Fold8 Ultra has more than tripled.
