Galiano Gold Inc. said Monday that two contractors were fatally injured in an incident at its co-owned Asanko gold mine in Ghana.
Emergency services responded to the incident near the mine-waste storage facility where the two contractors were pronounced dead at the scene, the mining company said.
The appropriate authorities have been notified and an investigation is underway, and Galiano said it is working alongside its contractor to ensure everyone impacted by the incident is provided the required support and counseling.
Asanko, a joint venture equally owned with South Africa's Gold Fields Ltd., is managed and operated by Galiano.
Last month, Galiano said the mine reported no total recordable injuries and no lost-time injuries in the fourth quarter. Gold production for last year hit 170,342 troy ounces, ahead of the company's original guidance for 100,000 to 120,000 ounces.
