It's shaping up to be a tough period for Caleres, Inc. (NYSE:CAL), which a week ago released some disappointing quarterly results that could have a notable impact on how the market views the stock. It wasn't a great result overall - while revenue fell marginally short of analyst estimates at US$683m, statutory earnings missed forecasts by an incredible 31%, coming in at just US$0.85 per share. The analysts typically update their forecasts at each earnings report, and we can judge from their estimates whether their view of the company has changed or if there are any new concerns to be aware of. With this in mind, we've gathered the latest statutory forecasts to see what the analysts are expecting for next year.

Following last week's earnings report, Caleres' four analysts are forecasting 2025 revenues to be US$2.76b, approximately in line with the last 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are expected to fall 11% to US$3.96 in the same period. In the lead-up to this report, the analysts had been modelling revenues of US$2.85b and earnings per share (EPS) of US$4.39 in 2025. The analysts are less bullish than they were before these results, given the reduced revenue forecasts and the minor downgrade to earnings per share expectations.
It'll come as no surprise then, to learn that the analysts have cut their price target 18% to US$36.67. Fixating on a single price target can be unwise though, since the consensus target is effectively the average of analyst price targets. As a result, some investors like to look at the range of estimates to see if there are any diverging opinions on the company's valuation. Currently, the most bullish analyst values Caleres at US$43.00 per share, while the most bearish prices it at US$30.00. These price targets show that analysts do have some differing views on the business, but the estimates do not vary enough to suggest to us that some are betting on wild success or utter failure.
Taking a look at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can understand these forecasts is to see how they compare to both past performance and industry growth estimates. We would highlight that revenue is expected to reverse, with a forecast 2.8% annualised decline to the end of 2025. That is a notable change from historical growth of 1.9% over the last five years. Compare this with our data, which suggests that other companies in the same industry are, in aggregate, expected to see their revenue grow 4.9% per year. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - Caleres is expected to lag the wider industry.
The biggest concern is that the analysts reduced their earnings per share estimates, suggesting business headwinds could lay ahead for Caleres. On the negative side, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, and forecasts imply they will perform worse than the wider industry. The consensus price target fell measurably, with the analysts seemingly not reassured by the latest results, leading to a lower estimate of Caleres' future valuation.
Keeping that in mind, we still think that the longer term trajectory of the business is much more important for investors to consider. We have forecasts for Caleres going out to 2027, and you can see them free on our platform here.
That said, it's still necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with Caleres , and understanding this should be part of your investment process.
