Shareholders in AdaptHealth (NASDAQ:AHCO) are in the red if they invested three years ago

While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the AdaptHealth Corp. (NASDAQ:AHCO) share price has gained 21% in the last three months. But over the last three years we've seen a quite serious decline. Regrettably, the share price slid 59% in that period. So it is really good to see an improvement. Perhaps the company has turned over a new leaf.

Now let's have a look at the company's fundamentals, and see if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

AdaptHealth became profitable within the last five years. However, it made a loss in the last twelve months, suggesting profit may be an unreliable metric at this stage. Other metrics may better explain the share price move.

Revenue is actually up 15% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. It's probably worth investigating AdaptHealth further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

AdaptHealth shareholders gained a total return of 24% during the year. But that was short of the market average. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it's actually better than the average return of 1.8% over half a decade This could indicate that the company is winning over new investors, as it pursues its strategy. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
