Does CorVel (NASDAQ:CRVL) Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like CorVel (NASDAQ:CRVL). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide CorVel with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

CorVel's Earnings Per Share Are Growing

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so you'd expect share price to follow earnings per share (EPS) outcomes eventually. So it makes sense that experienced investors pay close attention to company EPS when undertaking investment research. CorVel managed to grow EPS by 13% per year, over three years. That's a good rate of growth, if it can be sustained.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. While we note CorVel achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 13% to US$846m. That's encouraging news for the company!

While profitability drives the upside, prudent investors always check the balance sheet, too.

Are CorVel Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$6.3b company like CorVel. But thanks to their investment in the company, it's pleasing to see that there are still incentives to align their actions with the shareholders. Indeed, they have a considerable amount of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$582m. Holders should find this level of insider commitment quite encouraging, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience their success, or failure, with the stock.

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Our quick analysis into CEO remuneration would seem to indicate they are. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to CorVel, with market caps between US$4.0b and US$12b, is around US$7.8m.

The CorVel CEO received total compensation of just US$967k in the year to March 2024. That looks like a modest pay packet, and may hint at a certain respect for the interests of shareholders. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Should You Add CorVel To Your Watchlist?

As previously touched on, CorVel is a growing business, which is encouraging. The fact that EPS is growing is a genuine positive for CorVel, but the pleasant picture gets better than that. With a meaningful level of insider ownership, and reasonable CEO pay, a reasonable mind might conclude that this is one stock worth watching. It is worth noting though that we have found 1 warning sign for CorVel that you need to take into consideration.

Although CorVel certainly looks good, it may appeal to more investors if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see companies with more skin in the game, then check out this handpicked selection of companies that not only boast of strong growth but have strong insider backing.
