Insiders who bought Fossil Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:FOSL) stock in the last 12 months were richly rewarded last week. The company's market value increased by US$24m as a result of the stock's 30% gain over the same period. As a result, their original purchase of US$359.2k worth of stock is now worth US$485.0k.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Fossil Group

In fact, the recent purchase by Franco Fogliato was the biggest purchase of Fossil Group shares made by an insider individual in the last twelve months, according to our records. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (US$1.94), we still think insider buying is a positive. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Insider Ownership

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It appears that Fossil Group insiders own 11% of the company, worth about US$12m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Do The Fossil Group Insider Transactions Indicate?

It is good to see the recent insider purchase. And an analysis of the transactions over the last year also gives us confidence. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. Given that insiders also own a fair bit of Fossil Group we think they are probably pretty confident of a bright future. In addition to knowing about insider transactions going on, it's beneficial to identify the risks facing Fossil Group. Every company has risks, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Fossil Group (of which 2 make us uncomfortable!) you should know about.
