Champion Iron is again moving cargos of iron ore concentrate after completing repairs to its train load-out facility at the Bloom Lake mine in Quebec.
The mining company said it finished repairs Tuesday and is now collaborating with third-party infrastructure operators to gradually resume shipping activities. Machinery needed to load iron ore concentrate to rail cars broke earlier this month, halting the movement of rail cargos to the port of Sept-Iles.
The disruption will impact sales of iron ore concentrate, though the company said the load-out facility was repaired at a relatively negligible cost. Champion said it also took the opportunity to complete additional maintenance to specific facilities, which slightly impacted production.
Champion stockpiled produced iron ore concentrate at Bloom Lake during the shipping interruption, which it said is expected to be shipped in future periods.
The Bloom Lake mining complex on the south end of the Labrador Trough is an open-pit operation with two concentration plants that have a combined nameplate capacity of 15 million metric tons a year. Bloom Lake produced 3.2 million wet tons of high-grade iron ore concentrate during the three-months to Sept. 30.
