Better Weather May Not Be Enough to Fuel Vail's Visitation Growth -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
01-28

1322 ET - Vail Resorts' troubles are mounting as a shareholder calls for overhaul, its lift-ticket sales fall and it deals with fallout from a strike that infuriated customers. But on the plus side, Mother Nature appears to be in the company's corner. UBS analysts say in a research note that they spoke with a predictive weather demand analytics company that has data showing colder temperatures through April, as well as improved snow conditions from last ski season. Vail expects improving trends for the remainder of the season, citing visitation pattern shifts and current lodging booking trends. UBS analysts, though, aren't convinced better weather will fully offset the company's woes. They forecast 2Q visits up 0.7% overall, missing Wall Street estimates for a 5% increase. Vail is up 4%.
