Tempur Sealy International is on the hunt for a new boss for its Mattress Firm unit after the current chief executive opted to exit just days after the company's acquisition was completed.
The Lexington, Ky., bedding-products maker and retailer said John Eck decided to step down as CEO of Mattress Firm.
Tempur Sealy entered into a consulting agreement with Eck to ensure a smooth transition, and Tempur Sealy Chairman and CEO Scott will act as interim CEO of the business. Tempur Sealy said it expects to appoint a new CEO of Mattress Firm within the next six to nine months.
A week ago, Tempur Sealy said it planned to change its name to Somnigroup International later in the month after closing a roughly $5 million deal to buy Mattress Firm, a mattress specialty retailer. Tempur Sealy plans to sell 73 Mattress Firm retail locations and its Sleep Outfitters subsidiary, which includes 103 retail sites and seven distribution centers, in the second quarter of 2025.
Eck, who was executive chairman and CEO of Mattress Firm, joined the company in 2019. He was previously at U.S. Hispanic media company Univision Communications where he served as chief local media officer, according to Mattress Firm's website.
