Even though China International Holdings Limited (SGX:BEH) stock gained 21% last week, insiders who sold CN¥357k worth of stock over the past year are probably better off. Holding on to stock would have meant their investment would be worth less now than it was at the time of sale. Thus selling at an average price of CN¥0.075, which is higher than the current price, may have been the best decision.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the insider, Tatkwong Lee, sold S$357k worth of shares at a price of S$0.075 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is S$0.052. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it. Tatkwong Lee was the only individual insider to sell over the last year.

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. China International Holdings insiders own 45% of the company, currently worth about S$1.8m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
