ATN International, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATNI) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 10% in the last month. But that is little comfort to those holding over the last half decade, sitting on a big loss. Indeed, the share price is down 73% in the period. So we're hesitant to put much weight behind the short term increase. However, in the best case scenario (far from fait accompli), this improved performance might be sustained.
So let's have a look and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

ATN International wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.
In the last half decade, ATN International saw its revenue increase by 14% per year. That's a fairly respectable growth rate. So the stock price fall of 12% per year seems pretty steep. The truth is that the growth might be below expectations, and investors are probably worried about the continual losses.

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for ATN International the TSR over the last 5 years was -69%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
Investors in ATN International had a tough year, with a total loss of 51% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 23%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 11% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand ATN International better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider risks, for instance.
