Urban Outfitters Posts Higher Sales in 4Q

Urban Outfitters logged higher sales in its fiscal fourth quarter after ending the holiday season with Anthropologie and Free People continuing to offset declines from its namesake brand.

The conglomerate of fashion brands on Wednesday posted a net profit for the three months ended Jan. 31 of $120.3 million, or $1.28 a share, compared with $47.8 million, or 50 cents a share, for the same period a year earlier. Analysts polled by FactSet had forecast earnings of 94 cents per share.

Sales rose 10% to $1.64 billion, beating the $1.63 billion expected by Wall Street.

Urban Outfitters ended the period with comparable retail sales rising 5.1%, up from an increase of 1.5% in the third quarter. Anthropologie logged a 8.3% rise in this metric, followed by a 8% increase at Free People. Meanwhile, the brand Urban Outfitters logged a 3.5% decline in comparable retail sales.

The company also said that its rental business, Nuuly, achieved its first full year of profitability. Overall, Urban Outfitters' subscription sales surged 56% in the fourth quarter after seeing a 54% increase in Nuuly's average active subscribers.

Shares fall 4% to $50.80 in post-market trading. Through Wednesday's close the shares are up 15% over the past 12 months.
