While Coherent (NYSE:COHR) shareholders have made 170% in 5 years, increasing losses might now be front of mind as stock sheds 15% this week

Coherent Corp. (NYSE:COHR) shareholders might understandably be very concerned that the share price has dropped 36% in the last quarter. But in stark contrast, the returns over the last half decade have impressed. Indeed, the share price is up an impressive 170% in that time. We think it's more important to dwell on the long term returns than the short term returns. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price.

While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Coherent has made a profit in the past. On the other hand, it reported a trailing twelve months loss, suggesting it isn't reliably profitable. So it might be better to look at other metrics to try to understand the share price.

In contrast revenue growth of 18% per year is probably viewed as evidence that Coherent is growing, a real positive. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think Coherent will earn in the future (free profit forecasts).

A Different Perspective

Coherent shareholders are up 2.1% for the year. But that return falls short of the market. If we look back over five years, the returns are even better, coming in at 22% per year for five years. It's quite possible the business continues to execute with prowess, even as the share price gains are slowing.
