Canada Provinces Remove US Alcohol From Government-Run Liquor Outlets -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
2025/03/05

1420 ET - Canada's biggest provinces are pulling US alcohol from their government-run liquor retail outlets in response to President Trump's hefty tariffs on Canadian imports. The moves by political leaders in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia--accounting for about 75% of the country's population--mark a worst-case scenario for US spirits producers and vintners. Ontario, Canada's most populous province, sells roughly C$1 billion a year of US alcohol through its government-run retail and wholesale outlets. Canadian officials have also targeted bourbon from Kentucky for tariffs. Constellation Brands' share price is down about 1.9% in New York, while stock in Canada-based Corby Distillers is about 1.3% higher in Toronto. (Paul.Vieira@wsj.com, @paulvieira)
