Japanese tech giants Sony and LINE have announced a strategic blockchain partnership to bring four gaming apps from LINE's platform to Sony's blockchain network, Soneium.
Sony's blockchain division is integrating LINE's gaming ecosystem into Soneium, a blockchain network designed to bring Web2 users into Web3.
LINE, Japan's largest social media platform, has 200 million active users and this partnership is a significant step towards the mainstream adoption of Web3.
As part of the deal, four LINE-based games, Sleepagotchi, Farm Frens, Puffy Match and Pocket Mob, will be adapted for Soneium and will allow for in-game rewards and purchases powered by blockchain technology.
Launched in January 2025, Soneium is a layer-2 blockchain built on Ethereum using Optimism's OP Stack. According to L2 Beat, it is currently the 15th largest layer-2 network by total value locked (TVL).
The project is led by Sony Block Solutions Labs (SBSL), a joint venture between Sony and Singapore-based Startale Labs. The aim is to seamlessly integrate Web3 experiences into everyday applications.
“LINE has established a strong presence, and integrating successful mini apps into the Soneium ecosystem is the next step towards making Web3 more accessible. We believe this collaboration will increase engagement and adoption in ways that were previously difficult to achieve,” said Jun Watanabe, President of Sony Block Solutions Labs.
With Sony and LINE joining forces, this move signals greater adoption of blockchain technology in Japan's tech and gaming industries, further closing the gap between traditional digital platforms and Web3 innovations.
