1605 ET - U.S. stocks rise a day after the S&P 500 fell into correction territory, as lawmakers near a deal to avoid a government shutdown. All major indexes fall for the week, the fourth consecutive decline for the Nasdaq and S&P 500, as tariff worries increase uncertainty and consumer sentiment tumbles. Gold topped $3,000 for the first time as investors sought safety. DJIA gains 674 points, or 1.7%, to 41488, the S&P 500 rises 2.1% to 5638 and the Nasdaq climbs 2.6% to 17754. For the week, the Nasdaq and S&P 500 lose over 2%, while the Dow Industrials drop 3%. (patrick.sullivan@wsj.com)
