0646 GMT - Beverage industry association spiritsEurope has called on the EU and the U.S. to stop using the sector as a "bargaining chip," amid a trade dispute between the 27-nation bloc and the country. President Trump said on Thursday that he would impose a 200% tariff on U.S. imports of wine, Champagne and other alcoholic beverages from the bloc. Trump said the move was in response to the EU's decision to implement a 50% levy on American whiskey. "SpiritsEUROPE is deeply alarmed by the renewed threat of tariffs on EU and U.S. spirits--once again, as part of an entirely unrelated dispute," the trade group says. "EU spirits companies have invested heavily in U.S. production, including American Whiskey, just as U.S. spirits companies own distilleries across the EU," it says. (andrea.figueras@wsj.com)
