President Trump said he is looking at some short-term tariff exemptions to help car companies and said he exempted smartphones and certain electronics from recent tariffs in order to help U.S. smartphone makers, including Apple.

On autos, Trump says he's considering the exemptions for car companies that are looking to switch making parts from Canada and Mexico to the U.S.

"I'm looking at something to help some of the car companies," Trump told reporters at the White House, without giving any additional details. "They need a little bit of time because they're going to make them here," he said about the parts.

On Apple, Trump said: "I speak to Tim Cook, I helped Tim Cook recently, and that whole business," Trump said, referencing Apple's chief executive. "I don't want to hurt anybody but the end result is we're going to get to the position of greatness for our country," Trump said in the Oval Office.

Smartphones, computers, memory chips and other electronics will be exempt from Trump's so-called reciprocal tariffs, according to guidance published late Friday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
