The Trump administration plans to shut down the IRS Direct File program, a free electronic tax filing system, AP News reported Wednesday, citing people with knowledge of the matter.

The program, which was developed during Biden's presidency, faced uncertainty when Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency began cutting federal projects, the media outlet reported.

Some officials initially believed Musk's DOGE tech team might improve Direct File, but IRS staff were instructed in mid-March to halt further development for 2026, according to AP News.

The IRS, DOGE and US Department of Treasury did not immediately respond to requests for a comment from MT Newswires.
