South Korea plans to raise concerns over China's unauthorized structures built in their jointly managed Provisional Measures Zone (PMZ) in the West Sea during Wednesday's Korea-China maritime cooperation talks in Seoul.
The installations--first spotted by a South Korean fisheries patrol vessel in March 2022--have sparked concern that they may serve purposes beyond aquaculture, drawing comparisons to China's actions in the South China Sea, The Korea Herald reported Tuesday.
South Korea's People Power Party criticized China for building the structures, calling it a breach of the Korea-China Fisheries Agreement. The party demanded a clear explanation and urged China to act responsibly. Lawmakers also blamed opposition leader Lee Jae-myung's pro-China stance for weakening the country's position, the report said.
