Nano Nuclear Energy has received approval for its Fuel Qualification Methodology Topical Report, bringing its Kronos MMR Energy System closer to reality.
The nuclear energy and technology company said Tuesday the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued its final safety evaluation approving the advanced fuel design for use in the Kronos system.
The approval positions Nano Nuclear to submit a construction permit application for the Kronos reactor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the company said.
The Kronos system would be the first advanced microreactor built and operated on a U.S. university campus, and would provide the school with clean, resilient energy, the company said.
The approval demonstrates confidence in the methodology's scientific soundness and regulatory compliance, offering a repeatable pathway for advanced fuel qualification for Nano Nuclear's other reactors, the company said.
"With this regulatory foundation in place, we are prepared to execute," Chief Technology Officer and Head of Reactor Development Dr. Florent Heidet said.
The advanced fuel design defines the regulatory framework and testing approach for the qualification of Fully Ceramic Microencapsulated fuel, which incorporates tri-structural isotropic fuel particles embedded in a silicon carbide matrix, the company said.
Shares ticked up 5% to $19.44 on Tuesday.
