If you love investing in stocks you're bound to buy some losers. But the last three years have been particularly tough on longer term Generac Holdings Inc. (NYSE:GNRC) shareholders. Regrettably, they have had to cope with a 54% drop in the share price over that period. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 32% in the last three months. Of course, this share price action may well have been influenced by the 13% decline in the broader market, throughout the period.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Generac Holdings saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 14% per year, over the last three years. This reduction in EPS is slower than the 23% annual reduction in the share price. So it's likely that the EPS decline has disappointed the market, leaving investors hesitant to buy.

A Different Perspective

Investors in Generac Holdings had a tough year, with a total loss of 17%, against a market gain of about 7.4%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 2% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering.
