Elon Musk has said he will be stepping back from his day-to-day involvement in the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to focus on his other roles, namely as the CEO of Tesla.
He’ll have plenty of other projects to keep him busy. Here are some of the businesses under his umbrella that he can turn his attention to now that he’ll have some increased free time.
Tesla shares have cratered from a high of over $420 in December to below $230 this month. And sales of Tesla have plummeted, resulting in a 71% plunge in the company’s Q1 net income. In addition, Tesla dealerships have become targets of vandalism and violence since Musk parachuted into Washington.
Musk attempted to assure investors Tuesday that he will be spending less time working on DOGE and more time focusing on his company.
“Starting probably in [the] next month, May, my time allocation to DOGE will drop significantly,” Musk said at the start of Tesla’s earnings call.
The Boring Company, Musk’s transportation and tunnel construction firm, entered a memorandum of understanding with the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority to explore and potentially develop the Dubai Loop underground tunnel network.
The Dubai Loop pilot will reportedly have 11 stations and over 10 miles of tunnels to connect major hubs throughout the city.
SpaceX has stayed busy while Musk has been in Washington.
Space trade publication Payloadspace estimated that 2024 was a profitable year for the company, writing, “We estimate SpaceX’s revenue reached $13.1B in 2024, up from $8.7B in 2023.” Other figures include:
The Falcon 9 rocket will lift off from Launch Complex 40 this week and boost another payload of Starlink broadband satellites up into low-Earth orbit.
Neuralink might need Musk to take a more hands-on approach. It seemed to have cornered the brain implant space, but upstart Precision Neuroscience recently said it has received 510(k) clearance from the FDA for its Layer 7 Cortical Interface. That’s the company’s high-resolution cortical electrode array — for use in the recording, monitoring, and stimulation of electrical activity on the surface of the brain.
And, finally, X (formerly Twitter), could either use more Musk — or less, depending on who you ask. Mashable reported that it expects X to continue to hemorrhage users in 2025. Meanwhile, X competitor BlueSky reportedly now has 35 million users.
