General Motors is recalling almost 600,000 sport-utility vehicles and trucks in the U.S. due to a possible defect that could lead to engine damage or failure.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the Detroit automaker is recalling a possible 597,630 vehicles equipped with a 6.2-liter V8 gas engine, including certain 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles.

The Transport Department agency said the connecting rod or crankshaft engine components may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and failure, which in turn increase the risk of a crash.

GM dealers will inspect the engine and if needed repair or replace the engine, with repairs to be performed free of charge, said the NHTSA.

The company in mid-January began a product investigation after notifying the NHTSA it was looking into alleged engine failures in vehicles equipped with its L87 V8 engine. GM closed three prior investigations into the condition in February 2022, June 2023 and July 2024 based on the available safety-field information, the agency said.

GM's investigation identified 28,102 field complaints or incidents in the U.S., potentially related to a problems with the L87 engine due to crankshaft, connecting-rod or engine-bearing failure, of which 14,332 involved allegations of loss of propulsion. It identified 12 potentially related alleged crashes and 12 potentially related alleged injuries in the U.S., the NHTSA said.
