0953 ET - Canadians and others shouldn't anticipate that a possible U.S.-U.K. trade agreement heralds broader progress or is indicative of the tide turning on U.S. protectionism in favor of material deals, argues Scotiabank's Derek Holt. President Trump says he is set to announce a trade agreement with the U.K., the first of what the White House hopes is a series of such developments since slapping tariffs on allies and adversaries alike. Holt sees a deal with the U.K. as a bit of an exception, since Britain has been seeking a deal with the U.S. since Brexit and has so fair failed to secure one. The economist adds that the U.S. runs a trade surplus with the U.K., unlike with Canada, so it isn't in the Trump administration's crosshairs like other nations are. And, again unlike Canada, the U.K. is a relatively small market for American exports, Holt says. (robb.stewart@wsj.com; @RobbMStewart)
